78-year-old Cher has shared candid memories from her youth in a new excerpt from her upcoming memoir *Cher: Memoirs, Part One*. The music legend recounts how she met Hollywood icon Warren Beatty, now 87, when she was just 15 years old. She describes spending an evening swimming in Beatty’s pool until 4 a.m., wearing a swimsuit once owned by movie star Natalie Wood. Cher claims that on that fateful night, she and Beatty shared a kiss before going on two more dates together.
Cher first encountered Beatty one night in Los Angeles after he nearly ran her off the road while driving along Sunset Boulevard. “I pulled into the parking lot of Schwab’s Pharmacy, jumped out of the car, and yelled, ‘What the hell is wrong with you? You almost hit me!’” Cher writes in the excerpt published by *Daily Mail*. “The man was wearing large black sunglasses, but I still realized he was incredibly handsome, with one of the most seductive smiles I’d ever seen. When he took off the sunglasses, I knew it was Warren Beatty.”
At the time, Beatty, who was 24, had just starred in *Splendor in the Grass* alongside Natalie Wood, who was married, but had an affair with Beatty.
“Warren was ten years older than me, but he was so stunningly handsome that I had to focus when he asked my name,” Cher recalls.
When Beatty allegedly asked if she wanted to grab a bite to eat, Cher hesitated, knowing curfew was approaching. However, she remembered how much her mother admired Beatty, so she agreed.
“I almost fainted from his charm and that smile—such a devastating combination,” Cher continued. “But I pushed aside any reservations I had and said, ‘Okay.’”
According to Cher, things became a bit more romantic once she followed Beatty to his “beautiful house with an amazing pool in Beverly Hills.” They kissed, grabbed cheese and crackers, and spent time by the pool.
“We went swimming, and I wore Natalie Wood’s swimsuit, and we had a great time,” Cher recalls. “Then, I was driving home in a happy daze at 4 a.m., only to find my mom and stepdad standing at the door in their nightclothes, angry that I’d broken curfew again.”
The next morning, Beatty called her and invited her to dinner. Cher, aware her mother was likely eavesdropping, hung up the phone. “I didn’t want him to know how young I was or that I was grounded, so I told him, ‘My mom is yelling at me for being out late, so I’m not going anywhere,’” Cher added. “He laughed and said, ‘Let me talk to your mom.’ I saw my mom’s surprise when she realized who I was going to meet.”

When Cher went out on their second date, her mother whispered, “You owe me the full story!”
Cher went on two more dates with Beatty, but soon after, she met her future husband and musical partner, Sonny Bono, with whom she was dating the last time Beatty called her. Cher explained with her usual calmness why her mother allowed her to date a man nine years older when she was only 15.
“Any other mother might have stopped me from seeing a man known for sleeping with almost every woman he met in Hollywood (and New York, and Paris, and London, and Kuala Lumpur). But my childhood was never normal.”
*Cher: Memoirs, Part One* is the first of two volumes in the legendary artist’s autobiography. The book will be released on November 19.
